Electrolytes & Lactate: Does hydration influence the lactate threshold?

Anyone who takes their endurance performance seriously knows the lactate threshold. It's the point at which lactate production exceeds lactate clearance – and performance inevitably collapses. Training aims to push it higher. What hardly anyone considers is that hydration and electrolyte balance influence where this threshold lies – even with moderate dehydration. What Lactate Is and What the Lactate Threshold Means Lactate is produced during anaerobic energy metabolism – when muscles need more energy than aerobic combustion can provide. It's not a waste product, as long assumed, but an energy carrier that the body can actively recycle. As long as lactate production and lactate clearance are in balance, exertion can be sustained. The lactate threshold – more precisely, lactate threshold 2, also known as the anaerobic threshold – is the intensity point at which this balance shifts. Lactate accumulates, muscle pH drops, and muscle contraction is impaired. Those who go above their threshold must reduce their pace or stop. The higher the lactate threshold in relation to maximal oxygen uptake, the longer a high pace can be maintained. It is one of the most important performance parameters in endurance sports. How Dehydration Affects the Lactate Threshold The link between hydration and the lactate threshold is well-documented in research – even if it's rarely discussed in practice. The mechanism involves several pathways: Reduced blood volume. Dehydration reduces circulating blood volume. The heart must beat faster to transport the same amount of oxygen to the muscles. At the same absolute intensity, the relative heart rate is higher – the body operates closer to its maximum capacity. This shifts the transition from the aerobic to the anaerobic zone downwards. The lactate threshold is reached at a lower absolute performance. Impaired heat dissipation. Dehydration impairs sweat production and thus the body's ability to dissipate heat. Rising body temperature accelerates metabolism and increases lactate production at a given intensity. This also lowers the functional lactate threshold. Decreased buffering capacity. The pH value in the blood and muscles is influenced by electrolytes – including bicarbonate, sodium, and potassium. Electrolyte deficiency can reduce the buffering capacity of the muscle environment, meaning lactate leads to a significant pH drop more quickly, and thus to impaired muscle contraction more quickly. What the Research Shows Studies that have investigated the direct influence of dehydration on the lactate threshold consistently show: A fluid loss of just 2–3% of body weight leads to a measurable shift of the lactate threshold downwards. In practice, this means: The pace at which a runner switches to the anaerobic zone decreases. The wattage at which a cyclist reaches their lactate threshold is lower. The athlete fatigues faster, at an intensity they could easily maintain when well-hydrated. A well-hydrated athlete cannot raise their lactate threshold beyond the training-induced maximum – hydration is not a substitute for training. But a dehydrated athlete cannot fully exploit the lactate threshold achieved through training. This is the relevant point. The Role of Sodium and Potassium Sodium and potassium are directly involved in muscle contraction and nerve conduction. Sodium contributes to normal muscle function and normal nerve conduction, potassium to normal muscle function.¹ During intense exercise, the sodium-potassium balance shifts across the muscle cell membrane – a normal process that is quickly reset with sufficient electrolyte supply. If electrolytes are lacking, this reset takes longer. Muscles fatigue faster, the contraction frequency decreases, and efficiency drops. This is not a direct influence on the lactate threshold as a threshold value – but an indirect influence on performance in the range where one trains or competes at the threshold. Practical Consequences for Training and Competition Always perform lactate tests well-hydrated. Anyone having their lactate threshold determined in the laboratory or in the field should do so in a fully hydrated state. A test with 2% dehydration shows a lactate threshold that does not correspond to the actual performance potential – and thus provides incorrect training zones. Zone 2 training and electrolytes. Endurance training in the aerobic zone – Zone 2 – is the primary tool for shifting the lactate threshold. These sessions often last 60–120 minutes. After 60 minutes, dehydration begins to increase heart rate at the same output – meaning that without electrolytes, one unintentionally drifts out of Zone 2, even though one subjectively maintains the same pace. Threshold training and competition. Anyone training specifically at or above the lactate threshold – intervals, tempo runs, time trials – needs optimal electrolyte balance to fully exploit the potential of these sessions. Dehydration not only makes these sessions harder, but also makes them less effective as a training stimulus. Electrolytes before long sessions, not just after. If you only start replenishing after the workout, you've already completed the session with a growing deficit. Preventive electrolyte supply before and during training is more effective than reactive replenishment afterwards. What Electrolytes Don't Do For clarity: Electrolytes do not raise the lactate threshold beyond the training-induced level. They are not a performance-enhancing agent in the sense of direct physiological improvement. What they do: They prevent dehydration and electrolyte deficiency from lowering the existing lactate threshold. The difference is important – and it's significant enough to have a measurable effect in training and competition. Conclusion The lactate threshold is the result of years of training. Dehydration and electrolyte deficiency can negate this result in a single session – at least temporarily. Anyone who knows their training zones, tests their lactate threshold, and wants to perform at their best in competition must treat hydration and electrolytes as fundamental variables – not as an afterthought.
